While searching the web, I came across a file icon that you can set shortcuts to display as. It was created over 10 years ago, but still works just fine.

If you have Windows XP or higher, you will be able to open the attachment without problems. Just save the ICO file that is contained in the attachment in a place where you can find it. If not, I recommend 7Zip.
